Skating communities have been a big and meaningful part of youth and city culture for decades, but unfortunately they are often seen as a nuisance as they disrupt what could be a commercial space.

Despite skateboarding's use in marketing campaigns in Rotterdam, you will, ironically, commonly find anti-skating hostile architecture throughout the city. A beloved skate spot by the museumpark is being removed and turned into a parking lot, while the surrounding areas continue to actively discourage skating through skatestoppers on ledges and non-slip floors.

“These hostile architectural designs reinforce the idea that public spaces are solely for consumerism. Non-profit activities - basically public socialising - is considered anti-social, a concept that has been identified as ironic by many sides, including skateboarders”
